The last time we heard from urban explorer __Macgyver and his crew, they were creating pyrotechnic fire art in New York City’s abandoned subway stations. This time, they’ve hit up the demolition at the beloved street art haven, 5Pointz which was whitewashed last year. In an evening raid, __Macgyver, Mr_Dume, Jenyc_photography, _Fabricios_, franklyfrank and thompsonlxs_ capture what they describe to us as “a last hoorah” for 5Pointz. According to __Macgyver, 5Pointz “literally looked like it was blown away by a tornado.” Yet some of the street art was still intact. With a central building already down and the rest prepared for the wrecking ball, it is likely that 5Pointz will come down imminently.

Opening yesterday at 345 Broome Street, British street artist Nick Walker‘s first solo show in years All I Ever Wanted Was My Name On Fire is a showcase of new works by one of the originators of the British graffiti movement. Walker’s work has been seen around NYC for years; you may have noticed seeing a sinister looking man in a dark suit and bowler cap on the walls of Chinatown and the LES. Walker’s art constitutes a mixture of styles: stenciling, graffiti and dark humor, which has gained him a much deserved following around the world, especially in NYC.

His new works continue the style he has perfected since the early 90s. It also serves as a continuation of the Vandal (the dapper character of his artwork) storyline. The show is also promoting the newest book by the artist and his collaboration with London based tableware company Royal Dulton. The show is running for only one week so we suggest you find some time to catch one of the globe’s most popular street artists latest works and prints.

Last Saturday, we had the pleasure of seeing eight of the best street artists in NYC, duke it out in Little Italy. The battle was put on by the L.I.S.A Project, in celebration of their second year bringing street art to Manhattan’s Little Italy. Currently in the midst of a controversy concerning the hashstag #TakingBackTheStreets, the L.I.S.A Project has seen much success in transforming Little Italy into a street art hot-spot, joining the ranks of Welling Court in Queens and The Bushwick Collective in Brooklyn.

Last year, on November 18, 2013, New Yorkers woke up to the news that Long Island City street art haven 5Pointz had been whitewashed, following a long effort to save the building and get it landmarked. This past Tuesday night, 5pointz organizers hosted “5 POINTZ Art is life… You can’t trademark the people!” a memorial event to mark the first anniversary of that day.

NYC street artist Hot Tea—an artist whose work mostly consist of forming geometric words and shapes using yarn—is not happy with the rapid change that has come to New York City. He is tired of seeing historic buildings transformed into condos, and he is tired of the city’s identity being tossed away like yesterday’s Jets roster. One night walking through the city, the artist walked past the historic building on 190 Bowery owned by art collector and photographer Jay Maisel, and made his opinion known: “UUGHH” read on the exterior.

Sweet Toof

The Pandemic Gallery in Brooklyn presented the opening of UK street artist Sweet Toof’s second NYC solo show Derailed this past weekend. If you happen to journey around Bushwick or look out the windows of an elevated J Train; you would be hard pressed not to notice the bright pink gums, with bright white teeth, on Brooklyn’s streets and rooftops. Sweet Toof’s colorful cartoon iconography filled the large gallery, with a colossal mixture of works that included oil paintings, graffiti murals, sculpture and performance art.

Before they hit the court to take on the Miami Heat, the Brooklyn Nets (who took part in a major political statement last week) decided to make a pay respects to a fallen fan last night at Barclays Center. Along with a video tribute, every member of the Nets wore a shirt with the name ‘Gamberlo’ and the number 44 on the back. This was in tribute to fallen fan Jefferey Vanchiro a.k.a Jeffrey ‘Korn’ Gamblero. The graffiti artist and former professional poker player sadly passed away last weekend, setting shockwaves through the NYC art scene.

Oh you thought it was over? That after our list of the Top 10 NYC Street Art Graffiti Pieces of 2014, we had nothing more to say about art this year? Well this is the season of giving and we have one more heavily researched and debated list for you. Not since the early days of graffiti has art in New York City been more mobile. These traveling masterpieces move around the streets and highways of the city, popping up in every borough, making those in the know appreciate seeing a work of art minus the travel time. From pieces from some of the best NYC artists to pieces that will take you back in time, these are the top 10 Graffiti trucks of 2014.

The Michael Bay produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie SUCKED! Like we wouldn’t wish this on our worst enemy kind of suck. Honestly, there has never really been a good Ninja Turtles movie (sorry), but for us who remember the awesome early 90s cartoon and classic video games (Turtles in Time!), we always have hope that the “world’s most fearsome fighting team” will be in something that is watchable. Until that time, let us all appreciate this awesome truck by graff artist Nerds.

Lucky for us, the graffiti and street artists of New York are not taking a break just because it’s January. The temperature may be below freezing, but the men and women who pick up spray cans and paint brushes are not letting something like the cold stop them from making the streets just a bit more colorful. By day, Charles Leval is an artist and teacher in Paris. In his spare time, he’s a street artist that goes by the name Levalet and has been adding some humor onto the streets of Paris since at least 2012. Often using objects already embedded into walls, his wheat paste works plays on the architecture of the streets themselves. While this style of work inevitably draws comparison to Banksy, he also institutes an almost still-life like method, perhaps from his training as an artist, by inserting found objects into his scenes from books, umbrellas, pool cues, wine glasses to even an electric piano. Others pieces have a time lapse nature to them.

A brutally cold February in New York City has delivered record cold temperatures and has frozen much of the Hudson River. This isn’t ideal weather for artists and those of us who explore the city looking both high and low (and we mean really low) for great art. However, fortune favors the bold and those who battle the elements to paint out in the open or secretly somewhere in NYC’s many tunnels and abandoned locations should be praised. Respect also goes to the people who take their time to find and document the work of these artists, journeying to discover art free of censorship or approval from anyone but the artist themselves.

No, you didn’t read that wrong. AINT WET is a guerrilla marketing campaign for the rather bizarre clothing company of the same name run by one Abraham El Makaw. Over the last few months, we’ve come across a few of the signage he’s posted all over the city. His Instagram account, also the official AINT WET account, has a penchant for dead birds, dead fish, roaches, dead rats and marsupials, often smoking cigarettes amidst found trash. Nothing is beyond the limit, with two bottles of pee photographed to mark his 24 hours spent underground.

Love him or hate him, Hanksy knows how to throw one hell of a party. Last year we covered his event in the East Village (Surplus Candy), where he and a number of other New York City street artists took over an abandoned building, filling each room, stairwell and door with art. This past weekend, at a former Chase bank in the Lower East Side, Hanksy once again covered an entire space with his pop-culture based artwork filled with bad puns and artwork from an assortment of NYC street artists.

Just before dawn on Monday morning, artists erected a sculpture of Edward Snowden, the NSA whistleblower, atop the Prison Ship Martyrs Monument in Fort Greene Park. Though it’s the latest artistic expressions inspired Snowden, it’s not the first and will certainly not be the last. Here’s a recap of this latest sculpture, and 5 other Edward Snowden monuments that have gone up around the world.

ANIMAL New York was on hand to document the creation and installation of “Prison Ship Martyrs Monument 2.0″ in Fort Greene Park, and one of the artists, with voice altered in a video, says “It’s truly not just about the bust, it’s about the context. We feel its a continuation of a story that was started hundreds of years ago,” linking the story of Snowden to the many who died on British prison ships during the Revolutionary War, memorialized at the Fort Greene monument is martyrs towards American freedom.

Donated Fur Coats Become Street Art Installation Against Animal Cruelty in Dublin

PETA has been leveraging the power of street art recently, particularly in the United Kingdom. After chicken feet starting appearing all over London by New York City street artist Dan Witz, the latest is a guerrilla installation of donated furs, adapted into animal shapes around Dublin. This installation is by street artist Solus using fur coats from those who have changed their mind about the fur industry. Accompanying each piece is a sticker that leads to BanFurFarms.net, where they can join a growing list of over 30,000 people calling on Ireland’s Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine to ban fur farms. Says Solus, “Re-shaping the fur coats into animals is a way to remind us of the life it that once inhabited those garments.”
